FENSA Registered Company

FENSA?

FENSA stands for the Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme. It has been set up by the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) and other industry bodies with Government encouragement in response to the current Building Regulations for England and Wales.

When having windows and doors replaced homeowners must comply with current thermal performance standards and ensure that they get a certificate of compliance from FENSA or from Local Authority Building Control. FENSA also enables companies that install replacement windows and doors to self certify compliance under these Building Regulations.

Part L Regulations

Following changes to the Building Regulations which took effect from the 1st April 2002 the replacement of windows and doors falls within the requirements of these regulations. In simple terms these regulations dictate that the householder must either apply for Local Authority Building Control or use a contractor who is registered with a Competent Person Scheme that can allow contractors to self clarify their work.

A condition of these regulations is that the installing contractor must give or at least offer insurance cover to the householder against a breach, by the contractor of the said building regulations.

Part N Regulations

Where people are at risk from colliding with glass windows etc the glass should be robust enough not to break or be constructed of safety glass, or have suitable guarding.

Large sheets of glazing needs to be made obvious so that people do not collide with it. To ensure safe operation, windows, skylights and ventilators need to have controls and limiters. Windows and skylights etc, over two meters high, need to have safe access for cleaning on both sides.
